New Review from the Hot4Cryo Project

We are pleased to share a new review by Dr. Naya Koralli, Cryo-EM Engineer of the Hot4Cryo team, highlighting the expanding role of cryo-electron microscopy (cryo-EM) beyond structural biology and its potential to advance soft-matter materials and energy-related nanostructures.

The review brings together recent developments in instrumentation, sample preparation, and analytical techniques for beam-sensitive, non-biological systems. It also highlights the growing importance of artificial intelligence and open-data practices in establishing robust and reproducible cryo-EM workflows.

In addition, the article identifies key methodological challenges in the field and proposes a roadmap towards standardized protocols and integrated computational–experimental approaches for materials research.

The review was published in Materials Science and Engineering: R: Reports.

Complexity as a function of length scale. Materials science accesses similar scales as biological systems, and therefore, must be amenable to technologically similar characterization procedures.
